Sales
records from leading distributors of smartphone, tablets and other mobile
devices in Australia may indicate a strong market response to these gadgets but
it doesn’t mean that the PC has been rendered obsolete.
Despite the popularity of these modern and high-tech
gadgets in Australia and elsewhere, the old and reliable desktop computer or PC
is still here and it’s here to stay. Based on the recent report of Gartner, a
respected analyst firm, there is an indication that the ever-reliable PC is
slowly regaining its ground. Although sales are not as impressive as the
gadgets’ counterpart, it has shown improvement from its sales performance in
the previous years. The decline in sales this year is much less than the
decline in 2013 which may well indicate that the PC is on the road to recovery
by the year 2015.
Rapid Innovations On Mobile Devices
One possible reason for this is the rapid innovations
of the new gadgets which are now flooding the market. Users of these gadgets
are finding it hard to cope-up with the innovations, making it impractical to
own a gadget which two weeks later has new features introduced in the same
model. This could be attributed as one factor that brought about the slight
decline in the sales of tablets and other high-tech mobile devices. The most
revealing statement is the one reported by Best Buy about the sales of tablets
crashing down which is attributed to customer’s wise spending behavior during
hard economic times. Consumers are earmarking their hard earned money for other
more important personal and family needs.
PCs For Businesses
Another reason why PCs will not be out of the picture
is that companies / businesses are dependent on them.
- Employees use PCs to communicate by e-mails which enable them to engage in detailed correspondence with their business partners and clients.
- Day to day transactions of the company are easily monitored using desktop software applications. With its large memory and storage capacity, company records and financial transactions can be stored regardless of volume. Unlike mobile devices which have limited memory and storage capacity, desktop PCs allow for large volume of data entry and storage without having to use external storage drives.
Tablet Growth Peak Is Reached
With growth of tablet now slowing, this is taken as a
sign that it has reached its peak and a downward trend is looming. The market
will be saturated with stocks of tablets partly due to their rapid innovations
that sales cannot cope up with production.
Microsoft Factor
The recent move by Microsoft to stop supporting old
Windows versions is something mobile users welcome as it frees them of the
constant need to upgrade their devices, thus decreasing the demand for newer
gadgets or mobile devices.
Changing Mobile Environment
The shifting to PC against the mobile environment has
brought positive news for big time tech companies. In fact, giant Hewlett
Packard, a big hardware maker company has reported a considerable growth in its
PC unit for the first time in many years. The trend is so encouraging that its
CEO announces that they would double their production which led to the surging
of its stocks to 30 percent. Microsoft also feels the positive effect of the
shifting. A projected growth in the use of windows phones may continue up to
2018. Even Apple can feel the change in consumers’ preference.
With all the positive indicators showing, it is safe
to say that the PC has a long way to go in this tech-savvy world of ours. Its
practicality and dependability are the plus factors for consumers’ and market’s
preference.
